Hatha Yoga

What is Hatha Yoga?

My adult yoga classes I describe as "Hatha Yoga", however this is simply any practise that involves physical techniques. The literal translation of "Hatha" from sanskrit is also "force" or "effort". We could also say that the word Hatha comes from the sanskrit roots 'ha', meaning 'sun', and 'tha' meaning 'moon'. Yoga means Union. So Hatha yoga involves bringing into balance these two sides of ourselves, the masculine and feminine, the outer and inner, active and passive, light and dark. Hatha Yoga practises have a long history and have evolved over time. In a class today you could expect postures, breathwork, mudra, mantras, visualisation. Typically more slowly and with static holds than other forms of yoga. In my classes you can expect to start with checking in and withdrawing the senses, some pranayama (breath), some movement usually involving Sun Salutations or variations, some more static held postures in standing, sitting and laying down, and finishing with a relaxation or "Yoga Nidra". Adaptations are always possible for different needs, whether that is a long term condition, a recent injury, pregnancy or anything else.

I have been going to yoga with Amber for a couple of years now. I started with pregnancy yoga and now go to Hatha yoga once a week. I couldn’t recommend the classes enough. Amber is very friendly and approachable and the classes are a perfect mix of relaxation and movement. Amber talks through the poses clearly and there are always plenty of variations to suit how much you want to challenge yourself. I really enjoyed the pregnancy yoga and hearing from other expectant mums. As a mum of two young children I find my Monday night yoga a bit of peace that’s just for me and much needed in a busy loud house!! I would highly recommend the classes and have done to friends and family.  - Anna

I've been attending hatha yoga classes with Amber for close to two years now. I always really enjoy the sessions, and I definitely have noticed positive physical and mental benefits from the classes. I always come away from classes feeling relaxed, focused, and knowing I have done something positive that will help me to become more flexible, healthy, and less prone to injuries. I would highly recommend Amber's classes to anyone interested in starting developing a regular yoga practice. - Martin
